Ferndale is a collaboration between some of Melbourne’s finest; Webster Architecture and Interiors, Mazzei Home builders, and Nathan Burkett Landscaping. It was the sought-after prize of the 2020 Royal Hospital Melbourne Home Lottery.
The design brief for Ferndale called for a seamless alignment of contemporary architecture and landscaping with an immersive garden that could be experienced from every inch of the home.
Upon entering through a full height custom timber door, you are greeted by leafy vistas at every turn, beckoning the outside, in. Floor to ceiling windows, sliding pocket doors and a double void invites dappled natural light to dance through the home bringing life into the space and taking it from morning to night.
In the kitchen, soft green cabinetry is a nod to the garden pallet. Oak floorboards surround a porcelain island bench, finessed with luxurious brass tapware, and lead into the central dining room and open concept living space. Timber wall panelling complements the space with soft, natural detailing.
Light sprawls into the living room thanks to floor to ceiling windows that boast a height of 2.5 metres, creating sweeping shadows that bring the space to life. Emphasising the home's connection to the elements, a freestanding Escea gas fire sits atop a porcelain stone hearth; supplied and installed by Stoke Fireplace Studio, Melbourne.
The Fireplace
Installed at eye level with a large window for front row flame watching, the Escea DFS730 freestanding gas fireplace is the hero of the space. With its clean lines and sleek design, the fireplace works seamlessly within the philosophy of reduction and restraint.
The earthy hues of the flames are mirrored by warm leather furnishings and the changing seasons which can be witnessed from the living room. The addition of the fireplace not only brings warmth to the space in the winter months, but another aspect of nature that engages the outdoors.
Like the rest of the home, the Escea DFS gas fireplace is minimalist in its aesthetic, as well as its low maintenance nature and ease of use. An exercise in simplicity.
Through the artful use of light and space and consistent references to the outdoors this home is a secluded suburban oasis that invites complete calm and relaxation.
The Melbourne Royal Hospital Home Lottery
Ferndale was valued a 3.4 million dollars with all proceeds from tickets going to the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Stoke Melbourne Owner, Corey Greenway and the team supplied the Escea DFS730 gas fireplace at cost and donated their time in installing it free of charge.
Corey said that he was happy to get involved in a great cause and support the hard work done by the Melbourne Royal Hospital in looking after the community.
