A stone’s throw from the ocean, and immersed in the laid-back culture of Byron Bay, the three new luxury homes by The Designory are the epitome of coastal Australian living. Each home is informed by its rugged and earthy locale – perfectly oriented to capitalise on the Northern sun.
Three very different fires for three proudly unique homes – all supplied by Stoke Fireplace Studio. We talked to Director and Interior Designer Melissa Bonney from The Designory about why she chose each fireplace to match the respective villas.
Specifying a fireplace is a pivotal part of any design project as it integrates with every element of the home and the lives within it.
“A fireplace is a connection point for the home. It creates a space where memories are made for families and friends, a quiet moment for contemplation and a connection to nature within the home.” – Melissa Bonney, The Designory.

SAMUDRA
In Samudra House, a beachy Australian palette is met with hints of the Mediterranean, with timber-framed windows, white textured walls and polished concrete floors that beckon sandy feet and soggy towels.
In the living room, a breath-taking MODE KS1460 Gas Fireplace takes the limelight. Completely frameless, it boasts a seductive flame-display that encourages you to waste the hours away.
“We chose the MODE KS1460 for its large size and minimal frontage. As the living room is open and surrounded by glass panels which look out to the yard, we were able integrate the larger model to make it feel cosy and connected.”
The fire is surrounded in a stunning micro-cement finish which features throughout the home – creating a sense of cohesion.
“Its textured and smooth surround brings warmth and depth to the space. While the gentle curve to the front of the surround adds to the softness and integrates with the other curves throughout the rest of Samudra house. “

SIKATA
With sandy tones and rustic tactility, Sikata House maintains the same connection to the coastal canvas of Byron, while also introducing its own unique themes. Inspired by global experiences – showcased through a curation of handcrafted materials and lived-in vintage pieces.

In the living room, character and soul are in abundance and takes the form of eclectic artworks, warm tones and an Escea DFS730 Freestanding Gas Fireplace which designates a cosy conversation corner.
“We chose the freestanding Escea DFS730 to create a simple yet stunning feature in the living room and add to the ethereal feeling of beauty that pervades the home and stays with you long after you leave.
It’s simple and clean and complements other more decorative pieces within the house. “
The fireplace sits pretty on a striking cantilevered plinth which stretches out to the kitchen and dining area.
“The plinth was designed to create a shelf in the room which we styled - we loved the idea of raising the fireplace to eye level rather than leaving it on the ground. It gives a focal point and brings a connection to the surrounding open plan rooms. The natural tiles add an extra touch of texture and warmth to the room.”

LAVANA
With its whitewashed exterior and beachy hues of sage green, light oak and stone - the design of Lavana House harnesses the laid-back pace of life that is born out of Byron’s salty air.
The large, open plan home was imagined for large gatherings of friends and family, anchored by a magnificent MODE Corner Gas Fireplace.

“The open side of the MODE Corner was the ultimate selling point for us when picking this fireplace - it acts as a real design focal point in the room. The Lavana living room opens onto the dining, kitchen and outdoor entertaining areas – and can be seen through the floor-to-ceiling glass. “
The MODE Corner sits within a split stone wall, creating an intriguing contrast between the rustic stone and the seamless glass finish of the fireplace.
“The stone finish flows through the home, grounds the room and pulls back to Lavana’s true natural Byron Bay vibe.”

Three very different fireplaces for three distinctively different homes- but each with a shared ethos and connection to the land that facilitates Byron’s slow and intentional way of life.
