Named after the picturesque Melbourne street it sits on, Canning Cottage is the everything you would expect from the founders of Bicker Design, Josh and Jenna Densten.

Built in the 1870s with a charmless 1970s extension, it was love at first sight for Jenna (Josh needed a little more convincing!). Although they were in the midst of another major renovation, that wasn’t enough to deter Jenna from embarking on the challenge and soon after, the dated extension was demolished and construction began.

What was once “dark, damp and unloved”, Canning Cottage is now everything but. At just 4m wide and 8m deep, the petite home goes to show that style lies with the beholder, no matter what the size.

They used clever design to ensure the space felt light, bright and airy. High ceilings with skylights make the space feel bigger than it is, while simple design ensured the space doesn’t feel cluttered.

Built-in storage, furniture and streamlined cabinetry were essential to maximising floor space (check out the miniature fold-down table). Curves were introduced to soften up the studio and make it feel more relaxed (notice the beautiful curved mirror, fireplace, bench seat, coffee table and rug).

A subdued, calming colour palette of blush, mustard and pale peach were used throughout (those bathroom tiles!), timber joinery was introduced for warmth and the brick floor adds textural interest and depth.

As if this wasn’t enough for the talented duo, they are currently in the thick of building their dream home at the rear of Canning Cottage – another challenge we’re sure they’ll meet with bounds of style and finesse.
