Goldsmith Street House is a reimagining of a family home in Melbourne’s Elwood, guided by a clear architectural brief: to preserve the home’s heritage character while introducing a refined, contemporary layer suited to modern family living.
Distinct architectural elements — including arched forms and subtle domed motifs — are carried through the renovation, complemented by luxurious materials and a seamless indoor–outdoor connection, with an integrated gas fireplace grounding the living space and a feature wood cooking fireplace shaping the courtyard.

The fireplaces were planned alongside layout, structure, and joinery. Sammy Kairouz, Director of Interiors at CKA Studio, describes them as balancing elements within the home.
“The fireplaces became the anchor for that balance, creating appealing and cosy living environments,” Sammy explains. “They draw the eye, set the mood, and give the spaces a sense of warmth and permanence that ties the old and new together — both indoors and out.”

In the main living area, an Escea DS1400 Gas Fireplace is integrated into a stone and joinery wall system that also accommodates storage and media behind glass doors – which creates flexibility without visually overwhelming the space. This allows heritage cues to sit comfortably and still feel contemporary.

“The Escea gas fireplace gives you strong performance without dominating the architecture, and that flexibility meant we could integrate it seamlessly alongside stone and operable joinery elements.” Explains Sammy.

The glass doors open and close to conceal or reveal the TV above. Escea's Zero Clearance rating and flexible flue technology allowed for a flush integration alongside stone and joinery.
Where People Gather
In the courtyard, the Escea EW5000 Outdoor Wood Cooking Fireplace anchors the space, reinforcing congregation. Its frameless steel finish allows the fire itself to take centre stage, lending the outdoor area a grounded, informal character well suited to gathering.
“It had the right attitude for the outdoor zone: robust, sculptural, and social.” Says Sammy.
"The wood-burning element brings atmosphere - alongside the stacked natural stone, and the cooking function adds another dimension to how the space can be enjoyed.” Long afternoons extend into the evening, with the fire continuing to provide warmth well after the cooking is done.

The Escea EW5000 Outdoor Wood Cooking Fireplace creates a social focal point for cooking and gathering, offering flexible cooking configurations and ongoing warmth once the cooking is complete.
While the two fireplaces differ in fuel type and function, they share a common intent.
“They reinforce the heart of each zone. Inside, the gas fireplace enriches the refined architectural detailing and creates a calm, luxurious atmosphere. Outside, the wood fireplace brings grounding energy and connection. Together, they shape the way the home is lived in — warm, inviting, and full of character.” – Sammy Kairouz, CKA Studio.
