What is a Clean Air Wood Fireplace?
A Clean Air Wood Fireplace meets New Zealand’s National Environmental Standards for Air Quality (NES) — producing less than 1.5 g of particulates per kg of dry wood, and achieving at least 65% efficiency.
These standards apply to all new wood burners installed on properties smaller than 2 hectares — which covers most urban homes. At Stoke, we select Clean Air approved models that not only meet the regulations, but also bring architectural presence and design-led style to your home.
Do I need a Clean Air Wood Fireplace?
If your property is under 2 hectares and in an urban area, the answer is almost always yes. On top of the national standard, some councils have stricter rules — for example, Canterbury’s Clean Air Zones, parts of Central Otago, and Rotorua.
