In a highly considered, though slightly unconventional move by TKD Architects, Double Bay House III sits at the very rear of its generous site in Sydney’s picturesque Double Bay.

This perceptive positioning allows the ground floor living areas to sprawl out to an expansive front garden and connect with the decades-old native flora that resides in the park beyond.

The brief was for a bright and open family home, where light navigates the space with a playful enthusiasm.  TKD executed this beautifully with a full-height atrium, as well as custom-made perforated screens designed specially to direct the arrival of sunlight into the home.

The result, a canvas for dappled light.

All of the building form, the cut-out, the use of skylights, the positioning of glass elements are all about getting the right sort of light into the house, at the right time. “ –  John Rose, Director at TKD Architects.

Purposefully positioned on the ground floor, in the centre of the open-plan living spaces sits a double-sided MODE Tall Gas Fireplace.

The fireplace in this house is very important in its location, it’s also very important in its design. The way that you can see through it allows it to form the division between spaces but still allow connectivity from as far back as the kitchen.

The fireplace is exclusive to Stoke Fireplace Studio, and popular with architects for its exquisite design and flexible installation options, Stoke Sydney Owner Jarrad Strauss says.

One of the prime features of this product is the fact that it is entirely frameless, and you have the ability to finish the brass right up to the glass around the fireplace.

"From the frameless finish of the fireplace, to the large, elevated logs - the fuelbed is crafted based on Australian hardwood, giving the fire body for flames“ - Jarred Strauss

As well as its aesthetic appeal, John was impressed with the functionality of the fireplace, its ability to heat the space, as well as the support received from Stoke throughout the process.

One of the reasons we use MODE fireplaces is that they allow us to connect with their technician so that we can understand what we can and can’t achieve. “ - John Rose

The finished home is an exemplar of form and function – every element thoughtfully executed to be nurturing, and flexible as the young family grows.

When you’re an architect, to be able to walk in the door at the end and just see that it is what you imagined at the beginning, that’s what I love most about this house.
