Acclaimed New South Wales-based interior designer Nina Maya is used to designing masterpieces for other people. But last year, she became her own client.
The brief of her own home renovation journey was to blur the lines between luxury home, five-star hotel and art installation while creating a comfortable forever-home for her and her family.
The result is an absolute transformation in every sense of the word. Around every corner of Nina’s incredible home, coined Pavilion House, is a statement feature that’s guaranteed to make guests stop and gape at its sheer beauty.
Monochromatic marble and statement quartz lighting in the kitchen, a deep bath carved out of an enormous piece of jade in the family bathroom, muted colours contrasted with eye-catching art, furniture and furnishings throughout the home … the Pavilion House really is a feast for the senses.
One of the heroes of the living room is the Escea DS1400 double-sided gas fireplace which Nina says is both visually beautiful and effortlessly functional.
“Before the renovation, the living room was a very cold, uninviting space cut off from the rest of the living areas,” she says.
“The glass double-sided fireplace not only brings actual warmth into the space, but it also visually connects the lounge to the rest of the living areas. Because the fireplace is double-sided you can sit in the lounge and see all the way through to the kitchen which really opens up the space.”
Nina says choosing the Escea DS1400 double-sided gas fireplace along with the log fuelbed perfectly complemented her design aesthetic.
“The Escea DS1400 is my favourite fireplace on the market,” she says. “I love its sleek minimal look, and because it’s double-sided you can create a warm cosy space but still be visually connected to the rest of the home."
“I love the look of the log fuelbed too. The logs have such an authentic look and make the fire seem very inviting. The timber itself adds visual warmth to any scheme.”
While the fireplace is a standout of the room, its position and the materials that surround it are also spectacular.
“Around the fireplace is a curved wall which has been covered in a unique hand-trowelled plaster finish that we created in collaboration with our plasterer, Adam from Dope Deco. Essentially, we used a very thick plaster which Adam then trowelled by hand using a very wide combed hairbrush which gives it its organic wavy lineal lines that move across the wall horizontally and continue around the curve.”
There are countless spaces and pockets throughout the home that Nina could choose as her favourite feature, but there’s only one ‘heart of the home’: the Escea fireplace.
“The first thing I do every morning is turn on the Escea fireplace and enjoy a morning tea in front of it,” says Nina. “I always end the day curled up on the couch with my family, watching a movie on the TV with the fire going below it. It is such a lovely heat that we run it all day long during the winter months.”
