If you’re looking for renovation inspiration for your home here’s a good place to start. Architecture Now has released the 2016 interior awards finalists and there’s a lot to like. They might be commercial spaces, but there are definitely some fabulous ideas that you steal and bring into your own home. Here are our top four picks:

1. Statement Lighting

Pilkingtons

M11 Studio’s low hanging gold chandelier adds a touch of luxe modern mid-century glam to the salon.

Glass bubble pendants grouped together in inner city restaurant Pilkingtons give an ethereal, floating effect.

How to get the look at home:

Cluster glass pendants such as those found at Monmouth Glass Studio or Tom Dixon in odd numbers and at different heights.

For eccentric glamour you can’t go past Jonathan Adler. The Meurice Chandelier positioned lower (than even seems practical) will give you the same wow factor.

2. Black Walls

The Glass Goose

Atomic Café in Kingsland mixes black walls and trims with concrete floor and tables for a look that is modern, edgy and industrial. The black and grey is warmed up with wooden cabinetry, accent lighting and indoor plants.

Dark walls can also be seen in other finalists such as The Glass Goose and St Asalph Street.

How to get the look at home:

Painting walls black is a daunting prospect, but it’s a trend we’re starting to see more and more of. Take your cues from Atomic Café and The Glass Goose by adding contrasting materials (such as concrete, glass and metallic) for a sophisticated and dramatic effect. Wooden furniture and cabinetry warms up the space, and layering textures such as rugs, cushions and throws also softens the look.

3. Pops of Gold + Yellow

NZME

From the NZME reception light fitting and the gilded ceiling project, to The Glass Goose bar, it’s clear that metallics are hot right now. And if we had to pick the ‘colour of the moment,’ it would have to be citrus yellow. St Asaph Street, The Fonterra Centre, Life Pharmacy, Pilkingtons and Meredith Connell all incorporated the cheerful hue as an accent colour.

How to get the look at home:

Make a statement with furniture pieces in mustard yellow, like the Hobo Ottoman from Hunter Furniture or the Kovacs Louis Swivel Chair

Add visual dimension and texture by introducing metallic into your interior. If you’re worried about going overboard on the bling, just start small with a lighting or gold accessories such as these Wyett Metal Cubes from Country Road.

4. 3D Textured Wallpaper
